LAGOS SEPTEMBER 8TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Peter Obi has rejected claims by his former running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, that opposition politicians hoping to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election do not possess the capacity to bring meaningful change to Nigeria.
According to a Vanguard report published on Monday, September 7, 2026, Obi insisted that his performance as the former governor of Anambra State proves that he has the experience and ability required to transform the country if elected president.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the remarks during an interview previewed by Arise Television, where he discussed his vision for Nigeria and the policies his administration would pursue.
Obi said he would focus on restoring discipline and accountability in government while reducing the high cost of governance, cutting unnecessary spending, and confronting corruption.
He stressed that public funds should be properly managed and invested in areas that directly benefit ordinary Nigerians.
He further promised to strengthen security and law enforcement while ensuring credible electoral processes.
According to Obi, political parties would be allowed to operate freely, and his administration would not tolerate election rigging or other forms of electoral manipulation.
The former Anambra State governor also listed national unity, security, education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and improved welfare as some of his major priorities.
His comments followed a recent interview in which Baba-Ahmed questioned the ability of opposition politicians to offer Nigeria the level of transformation needed to address its challenges.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Baba-Ahmed, who was Obi’s Labour Party running mate in the 2023 presidential election, said President Tinubu should prepare to leave office.
However, he maintained that those currently seeking to replace him had not shown that they could significantly improve the country.
When asked directly whether his criticism also applied to Obi, Baba-Ahmed answered in the affirmative and included his former running mate in his assessment.
Obi’s response is therefore seen as a direct rejection of Baba-Ahmed’s position, with the former governor pointing to his record in Anambra State as evidence that he possesses the capacity to govern Nigeria and implement meaningful reforms.
