LAGOS JULY 29TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a shocking 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening game of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, with tactical decisions made by head coach Justine Madugu coming under heavy scrutiny after the final whistle.
The ten-time African champions looked in control for long periods but failed to respond effectively when Malawi increased the intensity in the second half. Temwa Chawinga opened the scoring in the 69th minute before Tabitha Chawinga made it 2-0 just five minutes later. Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria hope by converting a penalty in stoppage time, but Temwa completed her brace in the 95th minute to restore Malawi’s advantage. Uchenna Kanu scored another late goal for Nigeria, but it came too late to change the outcome.
One tactical decision that stood out was Madugu’s decision to start Michelle Alozie on the left side of the defence instead of her natural right-back position. Alozie has consistently delivered strong performances on the right, where her defensive qualities and overlapping runs have been key strengths for the Super Falcons.
The change disrupted Nigeria’s defensive balance, with Malawi repeatedly finding success down that flank. The Scorchers exploited the available space, creating dangerous attacks that eventually led to goals and placed the Nigerian defence under constant pressure.
Another issue was the coach’s slow reaction from the sidelines. Despite clear signs that the team needed fresh legs and a different tactical approach after falling behind, changes were introduced later than many expected. By then, Malawi had settled into the game, defended confidently and managed the closing stages effectively.
Although the players must also accept responsibility for individual errors, the tactical setup and delayed substitutions made it more difficult for the Super Falcons to recover. Against a determined Malawi side that punished every mistake, those coaching decisions became a major factor in Nigeria’s disappointing opening defeat at the tournament.
