LAGOS JANUARY 8TH (NEWSRANGERS)-United States president-elect Donald Trump has reignited controversy by suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
Trump said in a series of posts on his Truth social platform, drawing sharp criticism and renewed debate over the already strained relationship between the two neighbors.
Why does Trump want America to annex Canada?
Trump argues that Canada’s economy is overly reliant on U.S. trade, a move that is making America suffer.
“The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat,” Trump said.
“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be totally secure from the threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them,” he added.
The statement follows previous comments from Trump suggesting that “many” Canadians support the idea of unification.
Trump’s sentiments came only few hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned.
