Senegal Dumps  French As Official Language, Embraces Arabic

LAGOS MAY 1ST (NEWSRANGERS)-The Senegalese government has announced the end of French as an official language, replacing it with Arabic. This decision, made at a Cabinet meeting on Sunday, reflects the ongoing political transformation in Senegal.

The decision follows the recent election of opposition candidate Bassirou Faye as president. In a televised address on March 26, Faye declared Senegal’s commitment to honoring its international obligations and maintaining strong partnerships.

While emphasizing the need for change within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Faye outlined his priorities for Senegal:

* National reconciliation and institutional rebuilding
* Significant reduction in the cost of living
* Governance with humility, transparency, and anti-corruption measures

Senegal’s decision to abandon French is seen as a break from the colonial legacy and a symbol of Senegal’s aspirations for independence. Unlike its neighbors, Senegal has enjoyed stability and is a key member of ECOWAS. The recent presidential election results underscore the Senegalese people’s desire to forge their own path, free from the influence of Western colonialism.
