LAGOS DECEMBER 20TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The crisis rocking the Edo chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) nose-dived on, Tuesday morning as the ONTV Lagos correspondent in Edo, Gbenga Olowokere was brutally wounded.
Olowokere a member of the NUJ correspondents chapel was attacked with an iron bar by Cajetan Mmuta and Patrick Ochoga, two suspended unionists, after he resisted their plot to forcibly take the chapel bus out of the centre.
The bus which has been in the NUJ press premises for safekeeping after it was stolen four weeks ago by the driver was later towed out by thugs.
This was however not after Mmuta who is one of the 9 members of the union on suspension over their alleged sharing of the N5 million parting gift from former Governor of the state Mr. Adams Oshiomhole hit Olowokere on the head.
Trouble started when the state chairman of the Union Mr Roland Osakue on Monday reportedly gave the suspended 9 the key to the chapel bus and travelled out of town.
His decision followed threats of being suspended by the National President Mr Waheed Odusile acting in concert with Mr Eddy Ogude, the VP, South-south at a recent NEC NUJ Meeting over the EDO NUJ Congress to lift suspension of the 9.
Osakue had also given Aliu Ozioruva, the impeached secretary, who was recently expelled from the NUJ Correspondents Chapel having become a freelancer, the key to his office contrary to Congress resolutions and in deference to the NUJ National NEC.
The Edo NUJ Congress had in September suspended the 9 namely simon ebegbulem (vanguard), adobe Austin (This day), Tony Osauzo(Sun), Adekunbi Ero(Tell), Otabor Friday(Nation) , Ehis Igbaugba(NAN) as well as Mmuta (New Telegraph) and Ochoga (leadership) and Aliu.
The suspension followed their claims as ‘Friends of Oshiomhole’, and criminal sharing of the sum of N5m donated to the Union as parting gift by former governor Adams Oshiomhole in 2016.
