Why Tinubu Extends Tenure Of Customs Boss Bashir Adeniyi

 

LAGOS AUGUST 1ST (NEWSRNAGERS)-President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose tenure was originally set to end on August 31, 2025.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the decision was made to enable Adeniyi “to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives of this administration.”

The statement listed key initiatives Mr. Adeniyi is expected to complete under the extended term.

These include “the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project; and the execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.”

The presidency also commended the Customs boss for his service, saying, “President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service.”

It further expressed confidence in the impact of the extension, stating, “The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”

Adeniyi was first appointed as Customs boss in October 2023.

In June 2024, an investigation by SaharaReporters revealed that Adeniyi claimed two dates of birth at different times in official documents.
