Turkey Police Arrest Amnesty Director, Seven Others

Idil Eser, Director of Amnesty Turkey, was detained along with 7 other human rights defenders at a workshop in Istanbul on 5 July 2017.

LAGOS JULY 7TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Amnesty International has accused the Turkish police of arresting and detaining the Director of Amnesty International in Turkey, Idil Eser and seven human right defenders.
The were reported to have been arrested yesterday morning.
A statement made available to Newsrangers.com which accused the Turkish government for having detained Amnesty International leaders twice in spate of one month, revealed that for over twenty hours, those arrested were not allowed to contact their families or see a lawyer, adding that no one even knew their where about.
The eight human rights defenders detained are ?dil Eser (Amnesty International), ?lknur Üstün (Women’s Coalition), Günal Kur?un (Human Rights Agenda Association), Nalan Erkem,(Citizens Assembly), Nejat Ta?tan (Equal Rights Watch Association), Özlem Dalk?ran (Citizens’ Assembly), ?eyhmuz Özbekli (lawyer) and Veli Acu (Human Rights Agenda Association).
“Idil and the others were doing nothing wrong. Some are now being questioned on suspicion of “membership of an armed terrorist organization. A ridiculous and baseless accusation,” the statement signed Fotis Filippou, Deputy Europe Director of Campaigns Amnesty International, disclosed
Amnesty International lamented that this kind of attack on Human Rights Defenders is becoming more frequent in Turkey, adding that Erdogan’s government is abusing its power and deliberately making the country a dangerous place for people who speak out for human rights.
It urged the Turkish authorities to immediately release all the human right detainees.
