Thousands Expected To Celebrate End Of Ramadan At Turkey Dome Arena First Since 2019
LAGOS APRIL 29TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Ramadan, the holy month in which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, comes to an end the evening of Sunday, May 1. Large- and small-scale celebrations are planned to mark the occasion.
Eid al-Fitr at Dome Arena
For the first time since 2019, thousands of Muslims are expected to gather on May 2 to celebrate Eid al-Fitr at the Dome Arena, 2695 E. Henrietta Road in Henrietta. The day marks the end of Ramadan.
In 2020, the celebration was held remotely. In 2021, socially distanced prayer services were held at Muslim faith communities including the Islamic Center of Rochester.
Prayers will begin at 9 a.m., with pre-prayer recitation starting at 8:30 a.m. A 10-minute sermon by Imam Ajmal Agha will begin immediately after the prayer. Masking will be optional.
Iftar Meal
The community is invited to join an iftar at the Turkish Cultural Center in Greece. Iftar is the meal Muslims eat after sunset during Ramadan.
“This is something open to everyone of all faiths — just kind of to introduce ourselves and know us,” said Murat Al, president of the center. The center, to which about 100 families belong, gathers for Muslim religious services as well as Turkish language lessons, social gatherings, cooking lessons and more.
The iftar will be held at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Turkish Cultural Center, 2692 Dewey Ave. in Greece. It will begin with a presentation about Ramadan followed by Ezan, which is the call to prayer, and dinner. The theme of the evening will be praying for peace.
The meal will be Turkish food prepared by volunteers from the center, and there is no charge to attend. RSVP by emailing dialogue@tccrochester.org.
