Seven Arrested As Pope Francis Allegedly Escapes Terrorist Assassination Attempt
LAGOS SEPTEMBER 10TH (NEWSRANGERS)-A terrorist plot to murder Pope Francis in Indonesia has been foiled by local law enforcement with seven suspects arrested with potential links to ISIS, just one month on from a similar situation experienced by Taylor Swift.
The Head of the Catholic Church began his tour of the Asian nation, which is vastly majority Muslim, as part of a 12-day tour of the Asian Pacific region but it could have all gone so wrong in Jakarta.
Heroic citizens tipped off local police to the potential hit on the Pope‘s life and a series of raids were conducted over September 2 and September 3 in order to bring the suspects into custody and to protect the religious figure.
According to The Strait Times, officers found a bow and arrow, drone and ISIS leaflets and were reportedly motivated by the Pope‘s visit to a mosque in the capital city.
An additional motivation also came from claims Indonesian TV stations were told not to broadcast Islamic calls to prayer in the Christian’s presence.
“We have a mechanism to monitor and filter,” Colonel Aswin Siregar of the Detachment 88 counter-terrorism unit said. “We had tip-off information from members of the public.
“Densus 88 has taken legal action against seven individuals who made threats in the form of propaganda or terror threats via social media in response to the Pope‘s arrival. There was also a threat to set fire to the locations.”
The snuffed scheme came just days after Pope Francis spoke out against religious extremism in Indonesia as the 87-year-old wheelchair-bound man slammed “increased hatred”.
“There are times when faith can be manipulated to foment divisions and increase hatred,” Pope Francis said at Indonesia’s presidential palace. “Prejudices can be eliminated, and a climate of mutual respect and trust can grow.”
Precise details of the suspects has not yet been revealed and they have only been named as HFP, LB, DF, FA, HS, ER and RS.
