LAGOS FEBRUARY 22ND (NEWSRANGERS)-A rising rap artist has died at the age of 25 after allegedly committing suicide in a bizarre series of events.
Rapper Lil Poppa, born Janarious Mykel Wheeler, died Thursday after crashing his car on Interstate 85 south of Hapeville, Ga., and subsequently shooting himself in front of his manager in a hotel parking lot, according to TMZ.
The 25-year-old artist called his manager in a panic after the single-car accident.
The two met at a nearby Hilton hotel parking lot where Wheeler remained in his car, which was still drivable, speaking through a rolled-down window before pulling out a handgun and fatally shooting himself, per the report.
Hapeville Police chief Bruce Hedley confirmed that an off-duty officer working at the hotel called 911, and Wheeler was rushed to nearby Grady Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office ruling his death a suicide.
Police reported that it remains unclear what Wheeler and his manager discussed before the shooting, and no suicide note was found at the scene, according to TMZ.
Wheeler signed to Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group (CMG) in 2022.
He was best known for singles including “Love & War,” “Mind Over Matter,” and “HAPPY TEARS.” The Jacksonville native released his latest track “Out Of Town Bae” just last week.
“We are stunned and devastated by the loss of our beloved family member, Janarious ‘Lil Poppa’ Wheeler,” the rapper’s label shared on social media Thursday. “Poppa was more than just a talented artist – he was an ambitious young man with depth beyond his years and endless potential. Our love for him knew no bounds.”
