LAGOS SEPTEMBER 5TH (NEWSRNAGERS)-Over 800 people have been confirmed dead following an earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan.
Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani confirmed that the vast majority of the deaths reported so far were in Kunar province.
Al Jazeera reported that 2,500people have been injured after an earthquake destroyed numerous villages in the province of Kunar on Sunday, August 31.
According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 6 earthquake struck just before midnight local time in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.
In a statement, UNICEF Afghanistan said it had deployed mobile health teams to the impacted areas and is supporting health facilities providing urgent care for children and families.
Various world leaders have issued condolence messages to the victims affected by the earthquake, which has been described as the worst in Afghanistan’s history.
