Images taken in the early hours of this morning showed plumes of smoke rising from the massive fire at the car park in the village of Rijsenhout, which lays just beside the airport. Firefighters were seen walking through the roaring inferno as they tackled the fire.
Dozens of vehicles were completely consumed by the fire that burned through the night. Other vehicles close to the blaze appeared to have escaped largely unscathed.
The largest fires are out, but the fire department expects to be busy extinguishing for another while. “There are still a few electric cars on fire. They are more difficult to extinguish,” the spokesperson said.
The car park is used by holidaymakers who travel via Schipol by plane, according to local outlet the Leidsch Dagblad. The airport was not affected by the blaze.
