Ogun Police Smash Highway Armed Robbery Gang, Arrest Two
LAGOS MARCH 1ST (NEWSRANGERS)-Two members of a five-man gang of highway robbers were in the early hours of Saturday, February 27, 2021, smashed by police detectives attached to the Ogun State Command.
The gang had barely stationed at the Sagamu Interchange on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, waiting to strike, when a police patrol team from Sagamu Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Okiki Agunbiade, ran into them at about 1:30am.
Piqued by the arrival of the operatives at the scene, Crime Puzzle gathered that the armed gang opened fire on them, resulting in a shoot out, during which one of them was hit and could not escape like other members, who scampered into the bush, abandoning their operational vehicle.
According the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a press statement made available to our reporter, “The bush was thoroughly combed from where the other suspect was also arrested.
Oyeyemi gave the identities of the suspects as Solomon Aghofure, 30-year-old indigene of Delta State and 37-year-old Emmanuel Mathew, from Abia State, adding that a police corporal attached to the team also sustained gunshot injuries on his leg and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
“On interrogation, the suspects revealed that theirs was a five-man gang, and gave the names of other escaped members as Uche (a.k.a two million), Arinze and Uzor, all ex-convicts.
“It was further revealed that the three fleeing members served their various jail terms in okitipupa, Ondo state and Shagamu in Ogun state, and that, it was after their jail terms they formed the gang and recruited the two arrested members (Solomon and Emmanuel) into their fold”, the police spokesman said.
Crime Puzzle learnt the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, praised the gallantry performance of the officers, even as he has directed that the suspects be trasferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) without further delay, for discreet investigation.
The police boss has equally directed that the fleeing members of the gang be hunted for and brought to justice, while appealing to members of the public, especially hospital managements, to report anyone found to be nursing gunshot injuries in their vicinities to the police.
