Maneuvering Underway Over Replacement Of INEC National Commissioner Festus Okoye

INEC OKOYE

LAGOS NOVEMBER 26TH (NEWSRANGERS)-There are subtle maneuvers underway over the appointment of a replacement for Festus Okoye, the outgoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) National Commissioner from the South East.

Okoye’s 5-year tenure recently ended but sources reveal he has commenced lobbying to return to his position in charge of Voter Education at INEC.

However, some civil society groups are uncomfortable with his reappointment, citing poor handling of INEC’s communication during the last general elections, which enabled widespread misinformation.

The CSOs and other stakeholders favor Professor Chris Ngwu, an Enugu-based academic, to emerge as Okoye’s successor from the South East. They argue the position should rotate to Enugu state after Okoye, an Imo indigene, took over from ex-commissioner Anambra State.

President Bola Tinubu now faces a dilemma over who to nominate amidst the subtle tussle. Those advocating electoral integrity demand a replacement for Okoye while others lobby for his return.

The president is under pressure to decide between appeasing powerful interests backing Okoye or considering calls for an untainted appointment like Ngwu. His choice will indicate priorities between compromising for compromised candidates or upholding ethics at the electoral body.
