Locals Flee As ‘Massive’ 4.0 Earthquake Hits Delhi

LAGOS FEBRUARY 17TH (NEWSRANGERS)-A ‘violent’ earthquake has rattled Delhi today with locals saying it was the ‘strongest’ they had ever felt.

Tremors were felt in India‘s capital city as well as other northern parts of the country, reported India Today.

The magnitude 4.0 quake struck 4km southwest of New Delhi and lasted ‘for a few seconds’.

India’s National Center for Seismology confirmed on X it hit at a depth of 5km at 5.36am local time.

Terrified residents woke up to their homes ‘trembling’. There have been no reports of casualties so far.

Delhi Police wrote on the social media site: ‘We hope you are safe, Delhi. For an emergency help #Dial112. #Earthquake.’

‘Massive tremors were felt 10 mins back in Delhi, woke us up from sleep..I hope and pray everyone is safe and sound,’ one local wrote.

Another resident said it was ‘by far the strongest earthquake I’ve felt in Delhi. What even was that’.

It was described by one person as ‘the most horrible earthquake in recent times in Delhi NCR’.

It comes just days after a ‘stampede’ at New Delhi’s railway station left at least 15 people dead.

Thousands of worshipers had been waiting to board the trains bound for Prayagraj City, a temporary township created to host the Maha Kumbh festival.

According to NDTV, the death toll includes at least 10 women and three children.

Media showed images and videos of crowds pouring over each other at the station, following the incident, as police and relief teams toiled to ease the congestion.

In the aftermath of the crush, India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh took to X where he said he was ‘extremely pained by the loss of lives due to the stampede’.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some other federal ministers confirmed the stampede incident in posts on X without disclosing the death toll.

‘My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede,’ he said on X.
