Judge Postpones Trump’s Hush Money Sentence After Supreme Court Immunity Ruling

LAGOS JULY 3RD (NEWSRANGERS)-A New York judge agreed to postpone sentencing in former President Donald Trump’s hush money case following the Supreme Court’s momentous presidential immunity ruling Monday, a setback just weeks after Trump became the first former president to be criminally convicted, placing his sentencing less than two months before the election.

Key Facts

New York Judge Juan Merchan agreed to vacate the July 11 date, adjourning the case until Sept. 18. for “the imposition of a sentence, if such is still necessary, or other proceedings.”

Prosecutors said in a letter to Merchan they will not oppose Trump’s request to delay a previously scheduled July 11 sentencing date, an argument Trump’s legal team made in order to make a case on how the Supreme Court’s ruling granting wide immunity to former presidents for “official” acts will affect the New York case.

The sentencing was originally scheduled just days before the start of the Republican National Convention, a key date for the Trump campaign in its White House bid—the new sentencing will now come one week after the second scheduled presidential debate.

Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments in late May, following a weeks-long trial marked by salacious testimony of Trump’s alleged affair with Daniels and an alleged “catch and kill” scheme to bury unflattering stories about Trump ahead of the 2016 election.
