Hunters Massacre: Uromi Town Deserted Amid Police Crackdown
LAGOS APRIL 2ND (NEWSRANGERS)-Numerous Uromi people have reportedly stopped visiting their fields and are taking sanctuary in neighboring towns. The community is terrified of arbitrary arrests and potential reprisal, particularly among young people, many of whom are fleeing.
A local named Monday described what happened before the mob attack. Communities near Old Ilushi Road informed the vigilante group that the travelers were carrying weapons in their car. They were urged to step down by the vigilantes when they arrived in Uromi, but they refused. The alarm was set off when one of them produced a knife, he claimed.
Even though no one is defending the murders, the mob members have now left, and innocent individuals are being taken into custody. At a wedding ceremony on Saturday, police detained a man riding a GLK motorcycle close to Opere Secondary School. He continued, “He said he didn’t know what had transpired the day before.
He claims that the area is still mostly deserted, with very few motorbikes on the road. Additional arrests were made Monday at lunchtime. People are terrified. Kidnappers, many of whom are thought to be northern hunters and herders, have tormented this area,” he continued.
He also described a recent kidnapping: “On March 30, a young woman was kidnapped directly in front of her house. As of today at 2:00 PM, her kidnappers have yet to get in touch.
Although they do not support mob justice, the majority of locals who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity stated that the victims were suspected kidnappers rather than hunters as has been widely reported.
“No one supports mob justice, but these men were not hunters,” stated Mr. Akhere, another local. Dogs are used by true hunters. These alleged kidnappers have been pursued by our vigilantes. That day, armed and loaded with cash, they got into a truck outside Ubiaja. Not turning them over to the police was the error. People here are angry because they have suffered and lost loved ones. The government has not moved quickly enough.
Another local, Peter, claimed that when he returned and saw the wave of arrests, his cousin, who is involved in the town’s security operation, had to leave. “He knew he might be targeted even though he wasn’t involved.” Others have departed out of fear of reprisals. “Earlier today, we heard that there was panic in Ekpoma,” he stated.
Ekpoma Is Alarmed by Rumors of Invasion
Following reports that Fulani herders were preparing an attack, the local market in neighboring Ekpoma was in disarray on Monday. Traders fled and drivers made abrupt U-turns as a result of the false warning. Security guards, however, stepped in right away to defuse the incident.
Some people believe that the latest violence is simply a sign of a chronic pain. The 30-year-old Jenny Osajie remembered how her brother was abducted and killed when the family was unable to acquire a ransom of ₦5 million.
They bravely summoned us to retrieve his lifeless body, and we located it precisely where they instructed. Since I’m a Christian, I’ve let God handle everything. However, the rage is genuine. Why did the government only take action now, although we have been pleading with them for years? She asked, “Is it because of who the victims were?”
