Encomium As Nigeria Maritime Journalists Honour Customs CG Adeniyi

LAGOS FEBRUARY 16TH (NEWSRNAGERS)-If all that glitters are gold  then event of Thursday in honour of Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi best suit the description.

The event  put together by Nigeria Maritime journalist held at Oranmiya Hall of Airport Hotel Ikeja,  Lagos was a night of praise for the Customs Boss.

Present at the occasion were personalities of  timber and calibre  from within the Maritime sector. Chief Olayiwola Shittu , a past president of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANCLA) was the chairman of the day and also in the gathering were, Dr. Eugene Nweke of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Otunba Frank Ogunojemite, the president of the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON), Chief Akeem Olanrewaju, the chairman of the Customs Consultative Council as well as many other dignitaries.

Past President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANCLA)  Chief Olayiwola Shittu  who was the Chairman of the occasion set the ball rolling in his opening speech. He   reiterated  that they have got so many  Comptroller-Generals of Customs but CG Adeniyi is a  unique kind of person who  thoroughly deserve an award.

While  thanking  the CGC for advising the federal government to suspend the implementation of the 4% increase of the free on board (FOB) levy, Shittu  said,” The caliber of persons who are here and want to talk about you would give us an insight into what makes you such a successful person as well as a CGC. This is as a result of  the manifest changes that you have made in the Nigeria Customs Service.”

The chairman of the award planning committee, Mr. Okey Ibeke  spoke eloquently about the awardee  pointed out that  the occasion is first of its kind because this is the first time that different Maritime Media groups came together, assessed and discussed the performance of all heads of parastatals and without dissent agreed that they should honour Bashir Adewale Adeniyi as the Iconic Maritime Personality of the year 2024.

Ibeke disclosed  that the appointment of Adewale Adeniyi was not a bolt out of the blues as he has always been there working tirelessly especially his involvement with the World Customs Organisation and being  an  all round performer  in delivering on all the core mandates of the Service.

Ibeke who said the honour accorded the CGC was well deserved opened up about the other prominent achievement of Adeniyi  which includes a record generated revenue for the year 2023 that amounted to ₦3.2 trillion as well as that of 2024 which was also a record of ₦6.1 trillion, adding  that he has thoroughly proven himself at every turn in his professional career, most especially as the Comptroller-General of Customs.

Another Journalist of repute, Dr. Ovie Edomi read the citation of the Comptroller-General as the award was eventually presented to him by Chief Akeem Olanrewaju while flanked by the seven presidents of the different Maritime Media Associations and the Assistant Comptroller-Generals of Customs at the event.

Responding to the encomiums on his person, the Comptroller-General expressed his deep appreciation of the gesture, stressing that  the  award has inspired me to try and raise one or two issues..

“The first one is that of appreciating the fact that I have been considered worthy to be awarded tonight even though everyone here knows my attitude towards awards. I had resisted receiving awards until I got the call that all the Maritime Journalists’ Associations have .come together to honour me and that is a very symbolic gesture,” he stated.

He, however, advised the different media  associations in the maritime industry should be collapsed  into one Maritime Association for a common interest, adding there are plans for arranging training programmes  all Maritime Journalists.

“Another issue of note also is that a premium should be put on the welfare of Maritime Journalists. If all other operators within the industry are prospering and the journalists who report them are not, there will be problem. I also believe that your welfare should be the concern of all stakeholders. There is a lot that the Customs can do for Journalists, but there is more that they can do for themselves. Let us begin to work on initiatives that improve your welfare. Journalists should be able to access health insurance schemes and mortgage schemes too. for their own homes. These can be achieved, seed money can be raised and then have these schemes started,”the CG stated.
