Ballon d’Or: Boring Ceremony As Reactions Trail Messi Seventh Award
LAGOS DECEMBER 4TH (NEWSRANGERS)-This week’s Ballon d’Or ceremony was the subject of plenty of debate after Lionel Messi was handed his seventh award, with many believing the Argentine – despite potentially being the best player in history – did not do enough to warrant bagging first place.
And while Messi himself admitted that Robert Lewandowski should have won the cancelled 2020 edition, there are plenty who believe the Bayern Munich striker was more worthy of the 2021 award than the PSG man.
One such individual is Kamil Jastrzebski, a city councillor from the Polish town of Wieliczka, who wants to symbolically recognise his countryman as the best player in the world with… a ball of salt.
Speaking on behalf of a town known for its rich history of salt mining, Jastrzebski said:
“There has been a great deal of injustice, and
Robert Lewandowski has become its victim. Therefore – as a member of Wieliczka
– I propose that the city symbolically announce that Lewy is the best
footballer in the world.
“Some people want to give the captain of our team a Salt Ball. In the past,
salt was called ‘white gold’, so it also has a historical and geographical
basis.
“I think that despite inflation and the general crisis, Wieliczka will be able
to get enough salt.”
Funny stuff. For now, though, Lewy
will have to settle for winning the brand spanking new
‘Goalscorer of the Year’ award, which more than a
few people suspected was created purely so the Pole didn’t go home
empty-handed.
Another source of amusement (and bemusement) was Mohamed Salah’s reaction to finishing
seventh in the standings. Asked about his ranking after delivering
yet another masterclass performance in the Merseyside derby, the Egyptian burst
out laughing and said he preferred not to comment.
Former team-mate Dejan Lovren saw the funny side too, joking that Salah might
make it to sixth position next year if he continues as he is, while Jurgen
Klopp said to the press: “Is it journalists who vote? Then don’t ask me, it’s
your fault!”
Cristiano
Ronaldo didn’t make the trip to Paris for the ceremony, but he still managed to
make headlines outside of finishing sixth – the first time he hasn’t made the
top three in 11 years.
Indeed, CR7 took to social media to accuse France Football’s editor-in-chief,
Pascal Ferre, of being a liar and bringing football’s biggest individual award
into disrepute. He said:
“Pascal Ferre said last week that I confided in him
that my only ambition was to finish my career with more Golden Balls than
Lionel Messi. He lied. He used my name to promote himself and to promote
the publication he works for.
“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious
prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always
respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.
“And he lied again today by justifying my absence from the Gala with an alleged
quarantine that has no reason to exist.
“I will end by saying that my focus is already on Manchester United’s next game
and on everything that, together with my team-mates and our fans, we can still
achieve this season. The rest? The rest is just the rest.”
In short: boring ceremony, fun
fallout. Good times.
