By Samuel Orovwuje
LAGOS AUGUST 3RD (NEWSRANGERS)-Life after Covid-19 is not business as usual, and the rise of the new culture of learning has been embraced by Caleb University to meet the yearning of its teeming student population. This new learning initiative offers practical tools for rebuilding core values that will lead to education reformation and renewal. Attaining the highest standards of ethics and integrity starts with catching them young by applying sound principles to the work place environment, with a view to reestablishing education standard for national development and the restoration of her image in the global education market place.
Since the outbreak of COVID – 19, the university has emerged as one of the select institutions in the country which commenced e- learning without disruptions to its teaching, learning, research and corporate social responsibility efforts. Interestingly, the university has successfully conducted its affairs on the University’s online platform with student enrolment on its e-learning platform increasing from 8% in April, 2020 to almost 100% by early July, 2020.
To sustain this giant stride, the institution has invested in the human capital and key competencies of teaching and non-teaching personnel, to enhance service delivery in addition, general training and coaching sessions have been organised for students across department, colleges and faculties to upscale their attitude, skills and knowledge. Early in the semester, the university granted free access to students and teaching personnel to e- library resources to complement their capacities with other key learning toolkits. The various spiritual, and socio- political activities, including the just concluded Student Representatives Council (SRC) elections, are on the university’s online platform. The new executives have been inaugurated virtually. Indeed, this e-learning platform is being engineered by the university to serve its publics and enhance service delivery in learning and development.
One of the challenges in the COVID-19 era is physical resumption of lectures. However, those students who paid for accommodation fees ahead of planned resumption, have since been offered the option of carrying the payments forward or getting refund. Instructively, all students were graciously allowed to register for courses on the e-learning portal for the semester irrespective of fee payment status, while those yet to pay as a result of Covid- 19 issues were given free access to the University’s e- learning platform.
The Vice- Chancellor, Professor Nosa Owens- Ibie in furtherance of the University’s core vision and values particularly with the social responsibility ecosystem distributed food items to its host community, Imota. The university distributed foodstuffs to over 3,000 residents during the first lockdown. In addition, another community engagement was done by distributing relief materials which includes, branded sanitizers and facemasks produced by the university, to Imota, Agbowa, Adamo, Isiu, and Ikorodu which are the immediate communities of the University. The Vice- Chancellor, Professor Owens- Ibie said he is encouraged by the progress made by the university in spite of the challenges of the moment and declared that the institution is eager to sustain the e- learning platform and other initiatives during and after lockdown. He is optimistic that when normalcy returns and the lockdown is lifted, the current programs will serve as sweet -smelling savour and spur action plans which will further position the University as a destination of first choice to discerning stakeholders.
Caleb University was established in 2007, with a core mandate to fulfill student dreams through teamwork, and was given an award as Africa’s best university in Research and Entrepreneurship Development. Over time, it has built a solid reputation for attracting students and reputable academics. It continues its niche commitment to building character through consistent spiritual nourishment and fostering academic excellence.
Finally, as an institution, there are sufficient indicators that Caleb University, Imota, is set to do more by mobilising diverse resources to assure unique contributions to the education system and development process, without comprising standards, and promote a real difference to the lives of our students and immediate communities who desperately need its service and support. This resolve will enable students the scope to acquire skills, attitude and knowledge to exercise their God given talents in the comity of nation. Caleb University is well positioned for the realisation of fulfilling dreams!
